Day 53

Today I slept in at VVR with the plan of eating their breakfast (the food at VVR has probably been the best on trail) and leaving soon after to make as many miles towards Mammoth Lakes. Unfortunately, between VVR and Mammoth is Silver Pass, so staying for breakfast guaranteed slushy conditions. Clearly these plates were worth it.

Everyone else wanted to stay for lunch, so Roadrunner and I left with our friends on our heels. Most of the hiking was pretty straightforward—a hot, dusty, and recently burned side trail around Edison Lake, where we took a dip to cool off followed by a long climb up steep steps cut into the granite. This climb had one surprisingly scary creek crossing, almost all whitewater and up to my mid thigh. However this passed without issue and was rewarded by a crossing of a big waterfall a fifth of a mile up the trail.

From here we had another mile of snow free trail before hitting total snow coverage. For the next mile it was well-consolidated so that postholing was not an issue despite the mush. Then it became an issue and our pace slowed down dramatically. After about an hour of this we found a flat snow-free spot at Mile 884.3 and called it quits, planning to hit the pass, a mere 1.3 miles away, early next morning and get to Mammoth in time for lunch.
